the prms had a bad  rep for getting dry joints and bad caps.
What can i say but just that

This unit will on pressing the mic button produce a constant note on the speaker. The note is of constant amplitude as if were generated by an audio generator. By flicking the mic button on/off several times, it can be made to go away. 

The radio transmits but cannot receive, only brief moments of reception and then nothing. It transmits while the note through the speaker in ON.

On transmitting, the display shows an outline of an an arrow with an X on top.

I searched the Internet for schematics on this popular radio but can not find anything.

It has been suggested that the cause of this note maybe a fault in the audio section, can anyone verify this tip or suggest where to look.
